From the Trader’s Desk: Billions S3 Ep1: “Tie Goes To the Runner” – The King without a Crown?

“Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown…”

Greetings from the Trader’s Desk!

Before I dive into the episode, I would like to thank the writers of this episode, Brian Koppelman and David Levien. As a New Yorker, kid of the 80’s and a trader, I can tell you they bring the realness of all three of those things of which I am and hold dear. From the mid-town Manhattan office of Axe Capital, to the setting of my favorite place for pierogies, (Veselka) to having real hedge fund managers (Marc Lasry of Avenue Capital and Michael Platt of BlueCrest Capital Management) at the idea dinner, a line from the movie that changed my life (“Wall Street”), to a beautiful view of the Freedom Tower, they continue to not just make this one of my favorite shows, but bring it home so authentically. By Season 3 some writers would be phoning it in, but they certainly don’t. Continue reading “From the Trader’s Desk: Billions S3 Ep1: “Tie Goes To the Runner” – The King without a Crown?”

Wags by the Dozen

Wags’ Words of Wisdom By the Dozen

Wags, played by David Costabile, is my second favorite character on the Showtime hit series Billions–Axe being the first of course. Sure, he’s an acquired taste for some. But folks, I gladly claim Wags as my rapacious scumbag, too! So you better believe I jumped at the chance to write a blog post about Wags’ Words of Wisdom. Back in February of 2017, Showtime released their own Wags’ Words of Wisdom soundbite mashup:

Billions Season 2 Finale Set *UPDATED*

Billions Season 2 finale left us with more questions than answers exactly in the way that it should. And as we countdown to Season 3, I want to add  to the already long list of questions: Who do you think is the first person Axe talks to after his arrest? Chuck? Lara? His lawyer? Be open minded. Be creative. Make a guess. Find the answer below 😀

December 9, 2016 starts as an extraordinary day. I wake up to news any academic would kill to get! My co-author and I get a revision for a paper we wrote on civil wars from one of the top journals in the profession, and believe me, given that top journal acceptance rates wander around 10%, this kind of thing RARELY happens. So, I am over the moon and decide to reward myself by taking the day off for some shopping! And, while thinking the day could not get any better, I check my Instagram on the subway only to see a post made from 1 World Trade Center about Billions currently being shot in the area.

Bobby Axelrod and Wendy Rhoades: A Special Relationship – Part IV

In case you missed Part III, it is here.

Wendy is back at Axe Capital with her “black magic” to influence minds and the first such mind she tries is Bobby. Bobby says Wendy is not comfortable being part of a plan that would destroy Sandicot. Wendy responds Bobby wants to talk about Sandicot just because he wants her to make him feel better about what he is about to do. Bobby may have a point, when turned down, thinking he may not be the only one putting his needs “above those of the good people of Sandicot” while Wendy may have a point, too, thinking Bobby does not have feelings when it comes to business. Their conversation feels like a thrilling rally between Nadal and Federer. Who do you think wins it? 😀 Continue reading “Bobby Axelrod and Wendy Rhoades: A Special Relationship – Part IV”
