Billions on Showtime 3.11: Kompenso

Billions, Season 3, episode 11, โ€œKompensoโ€ was an episode built around annual comp reviews, those pesky one-on-ones with the boss where you justify your existence/paycheck, hope for good reviews of your work while fearing the worst. Who woulda thunk such events make for good drama?

Billions on Showtime, Season 3 Episode 11: Kompenso

While I stand behind my words that Axe and Chuck have so much in common that they could be BFFs in another life, this episode finds them at opposite ends of the generosity scale. While Axe does not even want to hear the word accommodation when it comes to people helping him make money, Chuck goes out of his way to accommodate his old pal Ira.

The opening of Kompenso makes me smile and laugh for different reasons. It makes me smile because the opening song “Wicked Game” brings back sweet prom memories. It makes me laugh because it features Nusret Gokce, a Turkish chef and restaurateur, whose Instagram videos of slicing and salting steak went viral and made him an international star overnight! Nusret now owns several restaurants, including one in New York, called Nusr-Et because Et means meat in Turkish! And while his dramatic serving skills seem to turn Kate Sacker of all people on, Kate prefers to look at the eclipse through the cereal box when Chuck offers to order the Tomahawk and have Nusret perform at the table ๐Ÿ˜€ Continue reading “Billions on Showtime, Season 3 Episode 11: Kompenso”

From the Trader’s Desk: Betrayal and Surprises S3 Ep10 “Redemption”

Donโ€™t you think I know what Iโ€™m doing
Donโ€™t tell me that itโ€™s doing me wrong
Youโ€™re the one thatโ€™s really the loser
This is where I feel I belong
Snowblind โ€“ Black Sabbath

Hello, and happy Friday from the Traderโ€™s Desk! This week, we see Axe looking for โ€œRedemptionโ€, and itโ€™s twofold: the $1.5 Billion Andolov is redeeming from his investment in Axe Capital, and Axe trying to find his own salvation, after almost selling something worth more to him than his soul โ€“ a piece of his firm!

After last weekโ€™s episode, Axe thinks heโ€™s all good. Heโ€™s got his โ€œIcebreakerโ€ in Grigor Andolov and his $3 Billion investment. Heโ€™s so relaxed he can take time out from his cap raise to play tennis with Maria Sharapova. However, Andolov gives it, and he takes it away. From the Trader’s Desk: S3 Ep9 “Icebreaker” Axe: Killing Yourself to Live?

So you think itโ€™s me whoโ€™s strange
But youโ€™ve never had to make the change
Never give your trust away
Youโ€™ll end up paying till your dying day
Killing Yourself to Live โ€“ Black Sabbath

Is that what Axe is doing? Is he putting himself (and possibly others) in such a dangerous position, just so he can still be Bobby โ€œFuckingโ€ Axelrod? And in the end, will it be worth it? Is he Killing Himself to Live?

Happy Friday from the Traderโ€™s Desk. Please indulge me this week, as I wonโ€™t be doing a usual recap, but more of my observations on the state of things at Axe Capital, and the possible consequences.

This weekโ€™s episode, โ€œIcebreakerโ€ was many things, but first and foremost for me, the word intense comes to mind. There was also an overtone of doom (at least in my opinion). Two main characters, Axe and Taylor, are putting themselves in precarious positions, although one is much more dangerous than the other. From The Trader’s Desk: “All The Wilburys” – We’re going to the end of the line

Every day I sit and wonder
How my life it use to be
Now I feel Iโ€™m going under
Now my life is hard to see
So tell me people, am I going insane, insane?
Am I Going Insane โ€“ Black Sabbath

Greetings from the Headbangerโ€™s Ball, oops, I mean the Traderโ€™s Desk! It will never get old for me, but once again Iโ€™m starting my post with lyrics from Black Sabbath. This episode had me yelling at my television, and asking if Axe is going insane. He is making all the emotional decisions that have brought him to the brink of disaster.

A triumphant Axe parades into Axe Cap to the tune of โ€œNever Say Dieโ€ by Black Sabbath! What else would a victorious kid from Yonkers wear but a Black Sabbath โ€œMaster of Realityโ€ t-shirt to confirm his bad-ass self is back! Of course Axe is a Sabbath fan; in Season 1, he showed his love for Metallica and in Season 2 his appreciation for Megadeth. Heโ€™s now going old-school, as Sabbath is considered by many the fathers of heavy metal (donโ€™t come at me with the Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple argument!) Axe has lived to fight another day. Itโ€™s nothing but high-fives and cheers for the returning King. Continue reading “From The Trader’s Desk: “All The Wilburys” – We’re going to the end of the line”
