Bend it Like Damian Lewis, Part I *UPDATED*

Yes, it is REAL. Yes, it is Zidane!

Damian Lewis loves football. He regularly plays for Anvil FC, an amateur football team in King’s Cross, and has taken part in several charity football matches including the celebrated Soccer Aid. Our guy shares in a recent interview with The Evening Standard he sees the sport as a form of therapy:

“I enjoy the total absorption in a white ball and 10 other guys and the focus, and the way it releases everything else from your mind. It’s brilliant, it’s the best occupational therapy I can think of. You run around and get fit and it releases any anger or tension that you have. I used to play at 7.30 on Thursday mornings in New York. I’d haul myself out of bed, even if I’d had a night shoot that finished at 2am and go and play. I love it.”

Well, I cannot agree with him more because I feel the same about running and swimming, particularly the “it releases any anger or tension you have” part. And we cannot be happier Damian will be playing the game he loves for a wonderful cause this weekend: Game for Grenfell is a charity football match organized by former football stars Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand “to raise funds and inspire hope for those affected” in the devastating Grenfell Tower fire that caused at least 80 deaths and over 70 injuries. Throwback Thursday: Damian Lewis owns Midfield, England Wins 3 – 2: Soccer Aid 2016

Our sporty bloke may have been spotted perpetrating some immaculate swings on the golf course a few days ago, but around this time last year, we were privy to seeing Damian knock around a ball for a bit and show the rest of the world his prowess in the game of footie at Soccer Aid 2016. Here’s a look back at that match and the three of us meeting up virtually to watch the game.

My personal favorite of all the pictures of this event, and, perhaps, my favorite picture of him from all of 2016…how he’s so far above the ground, so focused on the task at hand. A visual metaphor, really, for an entire career.

Top Damian Lewis Moments 2016: Soccer Aid

What a match Soccer Aid 2016 at Old Trafford turned out to be! So much so that it makes it into our Top Moments of 2016 for Damian Lewis.

Sure as shootin’, England came ready to play, with energy, enthusiasm, and most of all, a truly united front. With the Rest of the World, they 1) raised a tidy sum for UNICEF, a wonderful cause helping children all over the world and 2) Gave us a beauty of a show over a muggy evening at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

Let’s look together at some highlights of the match, shall we? Oh, and, England took away the trophy, 3 – 2, just so you know. 🙂

Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis in Will, A Liverpool Movie

English Premiere League (EPL) is starting this weekend! We have blogged about Damian being a HUGE Liverpool fan earlier here and we wish the Redmen the best of luck in the 2016-17 season. We will have a big party here on the blog should Liverpool finish at the top!

Now, a funny coincidence is that the first match Liverpool has this season is against Arsenal, a match that we have reason to believe may put the two boys in Lewis-McCrory household against each other 🙂

We have no idea if this is one of Damian’s London weekends (he is regularly commuting between New York and London as he shoots Billions Season 2 in New York) and if the two boys will be at the Emirates on Sunday but we hope they both enjoy the match!

So… The start of the EPL inspires me to take you all to Will, a football movie that Damian made a few years ago. And, hey, Will is not just a football movie; it is a Liverpool movie! Have you seen it yet?

The three of us, Damianista, myself and TBkWrm, all on separate continents at the moment, miraculously managed to meet up and ‘watch’ together. TBkWrm is already there in the same time zone, sporting her Rest of the World hat, so we knew she’d get to watch. As for me, by sheer dumb luck, I happened upon a live stream and darn near bust a hole in my hardwood floor jumping up and down at the OMG of getting to watch live. Damianista didn’t get to watch exactly, but did happily read along to our play by play, some of which I’ll transcribe for you now. Let’s look together at some highlights of the match, shall we? Oh, and, England took away the trophy, 3 – 2, just so you know. 🙂
