We celebrate this wonderful holiday with family and friends — we indulgeĀ ourselves maybe a little bit too much with turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and give thanks, among other great things in our lives, for Damian Lewis and the characters he brings to life and into our lives šĀ And then weĀ travel back to exactly two years agoĀ and beĀ proud of our favorite actor one more time! Because, exactly two years ago today, Damian Lewis received his OBE from Duke of Cambridge and made us all proud!
I didn’t know people could get that famous. Just briefly, I felt like Justin Bieber for a second. – Damian Lewis
Damian answers Cara Buckley’s question atĀ Times TalksĀ about whether he missesĀ Homeland which was “obviously a huge pivot” in his career:Ā “I have to say I felt pretty famous after Band of Brothers. I was like ‘well, I am doing alright, this is good, people stop me on the street, pat me on the back, say ‘I love your work Damian’ or they go ‘thank you for winning the second world war, sir!’… you know… as I peel off my tights doing Shakespeare somewhere on stage:Ā ‘thank you, this is awkward…’ so reminding people thatĀ I am just an actor… But Homeland… You’re right… I didn’t know people could get that famous. Just briefly, I felt like Justin Bieber for a second… It was a phenemenon, you’re right, it was a phenomenon.”
This little dialogue inspires me toĀ think of the relationship between theĀ actor and his fans!Ā We, as fans, are constantly talking about Damian. We post about him, tweet about him, and some of us even blog about him š WeĀ are pretty much set on what we think about Damian… but what doesĀ Damian think about fameĀ and his fans?
Our Englishman doesn’t stay cooped up between work and home, and neither do we, dear readers!Ā More sightings of our fair Englishman in New York and environs to share!
You know the worst thing about being a hardcore fan is the dry spells, these times when the object of your fandom is hard at work, filming, and no where to be seen. You’ve already watched most of his entire oeuvre, some of it many times over. And there is nothing to fill the void. Particularly egregious for such a time to come as we are also mired in the sludge of arguably the worst election of recent history, when the worst possible words and images are assaulting us from all our screens on a daily basis. Wherefore humanity? Wherefore truth and beauty? Wherefore art? And alas, wherefore Damian?
But, you know the best thing about such times is that we have you, dear fans, posting your sightings and run-ins. And we have dear Damian himself graciously posing for pics with you, his dear fans. So we bring you what has become an annual post: Our Englishman in New York.
