Billions News Amidst a Concordance of Damian Lewis

I don’t know about you all, but I am absolutely chomping at the bit for Billions to get to our screens. Damian Lewis? Back on cable TV? Not to get too technical or obvious, but really: Damian Lewis is going to be back on Showtime? All that implies? I can’t even.

So while we wait to see Billions wrapped up and ready for us, we’ve been following along on the filming and bits of behind the scenes we’ve been lucky to see.

Before getting to that, though, I’d like to talk a bit about the nature of obsession. (Apologies in advance for this post that is neither here nor there, but, in fact, is everywhere.)

Child’s Work for our Agent Double OO

If, like me, you’re slogging through the summer with kids home from school, all home media usually blissfully off or under your control during the day has been taken over by kids’ programming. One of the favorites running on our screens at home during summer is the animated series Phineas and Ferb.

In short, the series gives us Phineas, a chatty clever American kid, and his taciturn and even more clever English stepbrother, Ferb, getting into all kinds of shenanigans as they attempt to stay busy during…summer vacation! On their tail is persistently annoyed and shrill teenage sister Candace who seeks repeatedly to “bust” them, and never manages to, thanks to serendipitous help from subplot characters: evil scientist Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his nemesis Phineas and Ferb’s pet platypus, Perry. Perry is a secret agent for the spy organization O.W.C.A. (The Organization Without a Cool Acronym). Love it so far?

Now, I, like most stay at home parents, try to tune out what I can so as to stay moderately sane. But, I found myself paying attention to Phineas and Ferb. Earworm title sequence and songs, fun characters, great writing all worked to pulled me in. I mean really: Dr. Doofenshmirtz, the vaguely Eastern European CEO of Doofershmirtz Evil Incorporated given to long monologues, on an incessant mission to control a mysterious “Tri-state area”, always defeated by a clicking purring platypus? “Ah, Perry the Platypus, as always, your timing is impeccable. And by that, I mean completely PECCABLE.” Who can resist writing like that?

Swagger of a Kingpin: Bobby Axelrod

So much to think about, so much waiting in the wings. Seems a good time to step back and take stock. The recently released Billions trailer showed us a tantalizing taste of Damian Lewis’ Bobby Axelrod, an outspoken arrogant hedge-fund king who seems to think himself above the law. The trailer got me reeling with anticipation, and it also got me thinking…about the ways in which Damian has played his roles and about the differences between stage actors and those focused on working on film. Of how stage actors who get to be on film, so OFTEN, take an audience by surprise, making us say “Whoa, who was THAT?” And of how exactly they do that. Camel, elephant, or bison? Oh my.

An extended trailer for Queen of the Desert was released last week and I wouldn’t be the ‘forensic fan’ I am unless I did a frame by frame analysis for you, our dear readers.

In an interview clip shown on Danish TV,  Damian Lewis does a spot on impression of Werner Herzog’s description of this film.

This film is like a camel, and an elephant and a bison on top of a donkey, and I’m the donkey. But together we will make a wonderful movie.

So Herzog is the donkey, but who are the camel, elephant and bison? Believe it or not, the trailer coupled with some background reading may provide some clues!

Happy Anniversary to Damian and Helen! Let there be fireworks forever!

Summer means lots of time for doing things, being with family and friends, getting out and about, and less time for reflection or putting together long thoughtful blog posts. So, feeling at a loss for words, my post this week will be a pretty picture essay featuring our favorite pretties.

At times marriage seems to include as many distinctive ideals as there are people who are married. This week the basic human right of the freedom to marry got a revival and fresh face in America. And this week also marks the 8th wedding anniversary for Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory. Damianista will post her own anniversary tribute on the day: July 4. Indeed, Damian and Helen celebrate their wedding anniversary the same day America celebrates her independence, so let the fireworks commence for both!

Following are some of my favorite shots of these two. They are a remarkably stunning couple. Makes you almost forget the Brangelina’s and the Amal-Clooney’s of the world. Mostly because what Helen and Damian may lack in Hollywood high gloss (and the requisite and sad need for bodyguards everywhere they go), they make up for in rich intelligent resumes showcasing the sheer undeniable talent they both possess.
